| CASTLE 5* cod. LCO04 - ROME / NEROLA
HISTORY OF THE CASTLE
Near the Via Salaria, a few kilometres north of Rome, the Castle overlooks the verdant Sabina countryside and the green Lucretii mountains. Built in the Xth century on an ancient Sabina fortress, it was an impregnable bulwark against Saracens and Hungarians, it was given as a feud to the Orsinis at the end of the XIIIth century. Enlarged and fortified, it grew more and more impregnable; inside its walls the power of the Orsinis and their influence on Rome and on the Papacy increased. The scene of bloody fights throughout the Middle Age, it became after various vicissitudes a property of the Barberinis and of the Lante della Roveres.
